An efficient approach to building a smart factory

According to Mr. Pham Thanh Dai Linh – FPT Digital’s Consulting Director on DxTalks, a “Smart Factory” must be properly built, beginning with the orientation, desire, and strategy, as well as the current status of the company and supply chains, in order to take specific actions in the short-, medium-, and long-term periods.

“Smart Factory” or “Digital Factory” is now an essential trend that businesses, including today’s top-ranked ones, are very interested in.

Smart factories benefit the entire company’s supply chain and value chain, in addition to the factory itself. Manufacturing firms can understand how each stage, such as control, administration, and data-driven operations, affects supply, cost, or the resources required to produce a single unit. The smart factory is the foundation for businesses to respond to market demands faster, better, and more efficiently.

Mr. Pham Thanh Dai Linh, a digital transformation consultant for many large Vietnamese manufacturing enterprises, stated that a company that wants to approach smart production must methodically analyze, beginning with the direction, desire, and strategy that the company wants to focus on.

There are numerous options and solutions for smart factory orientation. It could concentrate on the production line or logistics. As a result, it is critical to prioritize what needs to be converted first. The recent supply chain disruption has had a significant negative impact on businesses’ production planning activities, causing all calculations of costs, personnel, raw material supply, and so on to change significantly and are likely to fluctuate continuously in the future. As a result, manufacturing companies must quickly determine the next steps to develop a specific plan of action and prioritize the jobs that will ensure effective business continuity.
Mr. Linh also shared a few examples of businesses transforming smart production in the direction of improving data-driven management capabilities. Enterprises can then focus on data connection activities to provide detailed control of the links between factory components (such as information exchange between production lines, preparing alternative equipment for maintenance, and so on), assisting in making information transparent throughout the supply chain. Beginning with the capture of machine information via signal access ports that record input and output (In/Out) signals in order to calculate the machine’s operating efficiency (OEE Overall Equipment Effectiveness). As a result, the plant’s overall operating efficiency (OPE – Overall Production Efficiency) improves.

Mr Linh went on to say that the digital age has created new opportunities and encouraged the development of new technologies used in smart factories, such as Industry IoT, BigData, cloud computing, AI, machine learning, and so on. Businesses can gain more value in the future by optimizing processes and resources in business and production management with the help of these tools. However, in order to be successful, businesses must clarify each stage, as well as the technology that will be used to bring the greatest efficiency and which will be used by the majority of departments. Businesses can then operate smarter, reduce costs, increase resources, make investments, and create new values while remaining competitive. This is also the value and approach of FPT Digital for companies looking to transform or build a smart factory.

Mr. Phung Duy Han, General Director of Omron Vietnam, also mentioned the connection factor as the first challenge when deploying the smart factory model in manufacturing factories in DxTalks. Because many manufacturing plants are 40-50 years old, connecting information technology and operations management, as well as machinery and equipment, has been a significant challenge. This barrier is exacerbated by the system’s early stage of development. Mr. Han stated that through digital transformation, this challenge can be transformed into a huge opportunity. Modern automation technologies will transform the entire enterprise’s operating model, resulting in a fully integrated system from the sales department, strategy with production management, MES system, PLM system, APS system, and so on.

The knowledge shared at DxTalks provides a clearer picture of how digital transformation can help businesses monitor, operate, and manage a complex production system while ensuring quality at the lowest, most effective cost with the fewest resources, as well as the digital transformation approach that best suits the individual context of each business.
